With the dirt road going pretty deep into the trekking area in the western part of the Annapurna Circuit, rumours are that the Jomsom Muktinath Trek, one of the classics, recommended by no less than Sir Edmund Hillary, is destroyed. WRONG. Keep reading to find out how one can do this majestic trek and still avoid the road. Perfect for families and groups not interested in just heights, but also people and culture.

This trek can be done in five days (on a fly in fly out trek), seven days (on a fly in drive out trek), or the classic full trail that will take around fourteen days. We give the 12 days option as the example itinerary.

Detailed Itinerary

Early morning flight to Jomsom and trek about 3 hours to reach Kagbeni, which houses the oldest monastery in this region which is close to 600 years old. This village is also the gateway to the restricted area of Upper Mustang. We follow the river trail on this trek, so avoiding the road wherever we can.

We have our first altitude today as we trek about five hours to reach the highest point Hinduism ever reached, at Muktinath. After visiting the temple complex, and the monastery, we eat lunch at Ranipauwa and return down to a little village called Jharkot, which also has a 500 year old monastery. For seasoned trekkers, there is a remote wilderness way from Kagbeni right unto Muktinath, completely avoiding the road.

Today we have to do a return to Jomsom and then to Marpha. Here we will follow a shorter route to Eklebhatti, thus avoiding the road, and then the river trail to Jomsom. Later, after lunch we cross the river and go upto a mountain lake and then return back to Marpha.

We cross the river at Marpha and take the trail in the forests all the way to Kalapani, only crossing over to the other side at Kobang for lunch. As we go, we also stand at the deepest gorge in the world, looking up about six kilometres on both sides to the top of the mountains, which look surprisingly near.

Day 5: GHASA

From Kalapani, we have to follow the road till Lete and then as we cross the bridge, we hit a remote forest trail above the road, until Ghasa.

We cross the suspension bridge at GHASA, where mule trains would cause traffic jams when the roads were not there, and follow the trail that is on the other side of the river all the way to Tatopani hot springs.

Enjoy the hot springs and the wonderful food here.

Day 8: SIKHA

In order to keep this trek moderate, we stop on our uphill today at Sikha for the night.

Today we keep climbing another four hours to reach Ghorepani.

After an early climb to POON HILL to watch the sunrise, we trek after breakfast through rhododendron forests to tadapani.

Today is an easy day as we descend to Ghandruk well in time to enjoy this award winning tourism village.

We trek down to the road head in Nayapul and catch awaiting vehicles to get to Pokhara

The tour itinerary starts in Pokhara, but we recommend at least two pre-trek days in Kathmandu for arrival and briefings and one day after the tour. The stated price includes the trek only; flights from/to Jomsom will cost around $110 per way.
