Trekking in Annapurna Region

Annapurna Region is the biggest adventure playground that exists in Nepal - everything is on offer - trekking, short hikes, mountaineering, paragliding, rafting, canyoning, immersive culture, agrotourism, relaxation, yoga retreats and mountain biking. This is the area of the fabled Hidden Kingdom of Mustang and the Snow Leopard, and somewhere in there is the deepest gorge in the world between two eight thousand meter peaks.

It is definitely one of the places on earth to visit before you die, and has something for everyone - die hard adventurer, soft adventurers, families or just tick it off travelers. It also has the most diverse cultures amongst the famous regions for trekking making each day a day of discovery.

List of Trips

Here is a complete list of our most popular treks & tours in the Annapurna Region. Do remember however that should these treks not fit your requirement, we are very happy to tailor the trip for you and make you a suggestion - for free. Just send us a quick email either by using the form on the right, or This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

What we recommend

It is very difficult to develop a best of in the Annapurnas, only because it bas so much to offer and can cater to so many interests.

Our suggestion therefore in this region? Unless you are doing one of the classics - the Annapurna Circuit, Annapurna Sanctuary (also called Base Camp) trek, the Upper Mustang Trek or the Jomsom Muktinath Trek, develop a custom tailored trip, which takes into account your interests, or the interests of your group.

This is best done using the Tailormade Annapurna option, and discussing closely with us, the interests and activity interest of your group. Best suggestion: remember to add at least three to four different activities.
Families can also opt for the Active Family Trip - which has something for everyone in the family, again developed as a custom tailored itinerary.

If you want to do an OFFBEAT trek in the region, the ideal one is the Classic Eco-Lodge Trek developed by Magsaysay Award winner, Mahabir Pun. This is our current favourite. Another favourite of ours are the short three - four day treks we develop as custom tailored soft adventures for customers that are not really interested - nor have the time - to do the lengthy classics.

One more recommendation to confuse you endless. Think of staying more than one day in some of the micro-destinations. A favourite in the company is the Muktinath Revisited that is modified with at least two to three nights stay in Kagbeni, just at the border of Lower Mustang and Upper Mustang. This village has an 500+ year old monastery and amazing architecture - and is ideal for taking small hikes, or bike rides into the mountains. Situated at 2800m it is also ideal, as it is just below the dreaded 3000m mark for altitude problems. Perfect.

Consider also the convert your treks in this region into a charity trek that raises funds each meter you climb, giving you a great opportunity to get involved in some of the charitable initiatives that we get involved in.

Other Adventures
Add another activity to a trip in this region. This will highlight your trip and leave you feeling that you did all you could to make the most of your visit.

One excellent suggetion here would be the tandem paragliding in Pokhara - a 25 minute flight with the lake below and facing the Annapurna Massif - definitely one of the best places to do it.

Mountain bike the easy multi day route from Kagbeni to Tatopani, or the classic Annapurna Circuit on MTB. You could also opt for just enjoying a leisurely afternoon ride in Pokhara to Pame, or with an overnight at TaraKuti - a campsite above Begnas Lake - for a ride and a swim.

Take a look at some of our excellent extensions in Pokhara, and choose one for your leisure time while at the beginning or the end of your adventure in this region.

I absolutely enjoyed organizing my trip with Social Tours. I loved how excited they were to show you about local culture and responsible tourism. Pratiksha was so helpful with planning my trek just the way I wanted via e-mail. She also took me out for coffee in Kathmandu, which was just lovely. Bipin briefed me before my trip and answered all my questions. He also took me out for breakfast, which was appreciated greatly. My guide, Kumar, was funny and responsible. He had a great sense of humor and took care of all my needs on the trek. My porter, Dil, was very good. He was always concerned about me and very kind. He liked to teach me about local things too. He even took time to show me around Pokhara, his hometown. I think he’ll make a great guide one day. My trek was beautiful and interesting. I was able to observe local, agricultural life on the Royal Trek. This trek was fairly easy and relaxing. I enjoyed staying in the homestays, which were much more comfortable than I expected. The experience was truly special and I enjoyed getting a glimpse of life in Nepal. The extra time that PratikshaBipin, and Dil spent with me made Social Tours stick out in my mind! I appreciated it a lot. Thank you!

I was very impressed with the professionalism, friendliness and competency of all the personnel at Social Tours. From the moment of first contact to saying “au revoir” on the last day it has been a very positive experience and one that has improved my appreciation and knowledge of all things Nepalese! In addition, your pricing was extremely competitive without cutting corners. I have no hesitation recommending you to anyone who asks and also to those who don’t! A very big thank you!

We are so glad we booked out trek with socialtours; from the minute we left the airport to the minute we were dropped back there, we always felt looked after.
The personal level of service was second to none, both from the team in Kathmandu and our guide and porter in the mountains. Pemba and Dugee were a hilarious pair who kept sprits high as we trekked and we very attentive in the lodges each evening, taking food orders and bringing us tea each morning – not what we were expecting at all.
Both hotels (Samsara & Barahi) were great although for different reasons; Samsara was clean and tidy and wonderfully central for all the facilities in Kathmandu and Barahi was a little bit of luxury before and after the trek – returning to a large, clean, tidy room and spa facilities was wonderful.
The transfers to and from the airport were a nice touch and helped link all parts of the trip together – the only issue here was that both transfers to and from Pokhara departed early leaving us waiting at the airport for the driver at the other end – but we can’t really complain about being early so it really is a minor issue. Perhaps giving out the drivers phone number might be an option here?
The biggest surprise was probably the level of hospitality of the welcome and farewell dinners. It was a brilliant start to the trip having dinner with a group of other new arrivals who we subsequently bumped into in the mountains. The farewell meal at Delice de France was excellent – wonderful food, buzzing atmosphere and great live music.
Overall we had an amazing holiday. This was partly down to the breathtaking scenery of the mountains, the beauty of lakeside Pokhara and the bustling excitement of Kathmandu, but mostly down to the quality of service provided by socialtours who made the task of trekking for 11 days a really comfortable, relaxing and enjoyable experience.
Thank you very much!

We will remember the smiles, the landscapers and wonderful sights during the trek, the discussions with Phurba and Indra and the efforts made by the socialtours! The words may seem weak but we will keep the images into our minds. Thank you for this travel, this experience.

The Smith family enjoyed their visit to Nepal and highlights were seeing sunrise at ABC on the trek and the Hotel Bahari in Pokhara. We found the Nepalese people very friendly and many of our concerns about booking a trek independently were eased by the quiet efficiency of Social Tours staff, especially Tassi, who dealt with any minor problems and always kept us informed.
I will have great pleasure in recommending Social Tours to our friends and other trekkers who we meet in the UK and on our other travels around the world.

If returning to Nepal for another trekking holiday I would have no hesitation in approaching Social Tours. Our personal requirements and preferences were excellently provided for. The company was competent, very ethical in their stance with regard to responsible travel and showed a very human face with their personal approach to us as clients. It is also evident that they welcome feedback – positive or otherwise – in order to continually improve on their service.

heather_fishlockSelecting a trekking agency and guide is not always easy as there are so many options to choose from but Social Tours provide a great personal service, plus you can book your trip in the knowledge that you are at least giving a bit back to the local communities.

Bill_Lhakpa_KarmaI want to personally commend Tassi for the great job that she did answering the myriad of e-mail questions that I submitted in advance of our trip and for her great hospitality at the evening meals in Kathmandu.  In that regard, the meal that we had at the Palace and Rum Doodles were both great.  The authentic music and dancing at the Palace was a great early introduction to Nepal.
The Hotel Tibet in Kathmandu and definitely the Hotel Barahi in Pokhara were both excellent and exceeded my expectations. The dollar amounts above are in addition to the amounts that I paid for my treks. The amount for services reflects my tips for Lhakpah, Karma and Sonam. I feel very good about how they treated me and vice versa. You all gave me an extraordinary gift that is hard to measure and reward.
A special thank you to Paljyor for helping me with extending my visa.
I really liked having Lhakpah as my guide for both treks. We had to work through challenges of language, age difference, fitness level and more.  Once that was done, it became easier for me and maybe for her, too. I kidded with her many times that “I came to these mountains for happiness, not speed”. She is an absolute mountain goat and I was slow and cautious but undeterred. She was also very helpful and good company in the cities.
I want to thank you all and especially Lhakpah for helping me avoid any problem with gluten in the food that I ate. This relegated me to mostly eggs, potatoes and rice but I am not complaining.
The additional help that you all provided in helping me get to Pokhara by air during the strike is greatly appreciated, also. The Annapurna Sanctuary was deeply Spiritual and missing that trek would have been a very big loss indeed.

I did a lot of computer research before I finally selected Social Tours. The treks that you provided and at their value price points have left me feeling that I did a very good job in picking your company and your people. My trip was a total success! Thank you all.
All the Best,
