Off the beaten trail

Trekking 'off the beaten track'

Most of the other trekking routes in Nepal could possibly be classified as 'off the beaten track'. There are very few travellers, facilities are often very very basic, but the experiences are astounding.

Most famous of these treks will be the one in Dolpo, in the Kanchenjunja Area, Gorkha, etc. We conduct these treks strictly on request, but we have also developed some of our own, chief amongst them being a Chepang Route, which is a 2.5 day trek to Chitwan National Park, through the old trade route from the south. This and some other treks are described here, meant for those who like going 'off' the beaten tracks.

Chepang Hill Trek and Chitwan Safari
9 days | November 2011

paulBooking and pre trip information from Shivani was excellent and nothing was too much trouble. All transport and transfers was efficient, safe and reliable. Hotels were excellent, comfortable and in good locations. Hotel staff were friendly and efficient. The Hotel Parkside in Chitwan was exceptional. The guide in Kathmandu was very good and the tour was very interesting. The activities and the guides in Chitwan was brilliant, this was our favourite part of the trip.
This was our fourth trip to Nepal and we were very pleased with socialtours.

Chepang Hill Trek
13 Days | March 2011

Staci and RichardVisiting Nepal had been a dream of mine. You all not only made my dream come true - you exceeded all of my expectations. It wasn't that every day was better than the last. You planned a trip where every day was just AS AMAZING as the day before. The office staff at socialtours, all of our guides(Sharad, Nhono, Tilak) our driver (Ram) our porter (Pasang) were FANTASTIC. We met and became friends with many of you that we know will last a lifetime.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for all your planning and hard work. My wish for everyone is that they can have one experience in their life that is as WONDERFUL for them as Nepal was for us. Namaste.

Responsible Peek into Nepal
11 days | Oct 2009

He booked this trip with us through, our trip partner in Norway.
FredrikI travelled with Ansvarlig Turisme/ Ethical Travel Portal to The Gambia in 2008. Based on that trip my expectation for this trip to Nepal was enormous. Would this trip and experiences be at the same level as I had in The Gambia almost two years back??
We reached Kathmandu airport after twenty hours journey. Here representatives from socialtours were waiting for us with a warm welcome. After arrival, transfer to the hotel and information about the trip and responsible tourism program we enjoyed our welcome dinner in a traditional Nepalese restaurant. The next day we spent time at socialtours office and learned about their work and efforts in responsible tourism. Later our Heritage Trail started to the many of the UNESCO heritage sites in Kathmandu Valley. The culture difference from Europe is a paradise for a photographer!
A memory I will not forget is our three days trekking in Chepang Hill Trail. We stayed at two homestays where we got an insight in the real Nepalese way of living, the Chepang Hill Trail background, how the network of homestay is organised and the porters’ role in Nepal. An unforgettable experience! Even if the trek was a bit hard I really recommend it!
In Chitwan we saw tourism in a bigger scale. The elephant safari reminded about a station where groups of four people continuously went into the jungle on the elephant searching for wild animals. In Chitwan we also learned about responsible tourism initiatives like the elephant dung paper project, Bio Gas Village, community library and more. We also got to see the negative side of tourism, the impact it has had for some of the poorest in the area, in good and bad.
Back in Kathmandu we visited an orphanage where homeless children are taken care of. We got a good understanding how it is organised. It is great to see the efforts from the management and staff to make this a good place for the children to live.
I could have written a book about my experiences in Nepal – but in short I recommend traveling with Ethical Travel Portal if you search a different kind of experience. Their trips are really something extraordinary, with great travel company as well. This is the reason why I join travels organised by ETP time after time.

Responsible Peek into Nepal
11 days | Oct 2009

LindaWe had a fantastic experience travelling with socialtours. They showed us the real Nepal in a responsible way. During our 11 days trip we experienced a lot from culture heritage trail in Kathmandu, Bhaktapur and Patan, trekking the Chepang trail, exploring Chitwan National Park, homstay, visiting villages and local people, learning from them about their daily life and visiting responsible tourism projects...  socialtours handled our trip in a very professional and friendly way; from organising our trip before arrival, during our stay and made sure we had arrived safely back home again. Working in the field of responsible tourism it is in particular good to see the principles in action. I highly recommend socialtours for a responsible travel in Nepal.

Tamang Heritage Trail & Heritage Tour
13 Days | June 2008

Our group of 22 Californians presented Social Tours with several unique requests. They accomodated us on every one with professionalism and generosity. Several members of socialtours, not only prepared every facet of our Kathmandu Valley tour and Tamang Heritage trek, but also took personal care in welcoming us, leading us and helping us. They even allowed time for reflections with all of our group leaders and exposed us to the real Nepal in a way that did not intrude on the villages or the environment. I hope to travel with socialtours again.

Having already had some experience with trekking in Nepal over many years and with guides and porters, I was very impressed and pleased with Social Tours' level of professionalism, competence, concern, flexibility, responsiveness and support as well their two guides' incredible skills and expertise in leading our group of 22 people. As the co-leader of the group, I can truthfully say that I am one very satisfied customer and would highly recommend Social Tours to anyone seeking a reputable travel/trekking agency in Nepal that you can depend on and trust to deliver a successful experience at an affordable price. Thank you very much, staff of Social Tours!
